Knowledge-Based Engineering CAD Templates Applied in Vehicle Advanced Concepts Design

This work is part of a series of studies developed by the author. It is intended to systematically address the study and definitions of advanced concepts for the development of automotive design with a focus on Vehicle Definition (VD) and Occupant Packaging (VOP). The methodology presented here is based on the concepts of Knowledge-Based Engineering (KBE) that captures consolidated engineering knowledge that is repeatable, reusable, and noncreative. KBE’s goal is to optimize engineering tools in pursuit of best practices and performance gains, reducing time and cost. This methodology proposes the creation of a three-dimensional (3D) digital model using a Computer-Aided Design (CAD) tool, which will be called here the CAD KBE template. This model is in line with neural network technology that mimics the brain’s own problem-solving process, and every single template will be organized interdependently with other templates.

Implementation of Multi-Sensor GPS/IMU Integration Using Kalman Filter for Autonomous Vehicle

Vehicle localization and position determination is a major factor for the operation of Autonomous Vehicle. Errors or unavailability of resources to determine this, poses a serious threat not only to the vehicle but also the environment around it. Global Positioning System (GPS) is one of the most common resources to determine position about the reference geographic coordinate system. But this resource has several drawbacks of its own viz. clock errors, multi-path errors and also uncertainty of good signal strength due to weather conditions or physical barriers. Also an additional drawback of a low-update rate makes it unreliable for the Autonomous Localization algorithm to operate on this. Thus a system is required which has no external environment dependencies to determine the position of the vehicle. Inertial Measurement Unit is a coupled system comprising of a 3-axis accelerometer and 3-axis gyroscope which records body force accelerations and the yaw rate.

On-Board Monitoring of Emissions in the Future Euro 7 Standard

The proposed Euro 7 emission standard foresees that the emission behaviour of Euro 7 vehicles is monitored via an on-board monitoring (OBM) system. In Euro 7 vehicles, OBM systems will monitor the emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOX), ammonia (NH3) and particulate matter (PM) for every trip through a combination of measured and modelled data. Sensors employed to support on-board diagnostics (OBD) in current vehicles may be used to support OBM. According to the Euro 7 OBM concept presented in this paper, OBM will serve a dual purpose: the first is to warn the user of a vehicle about the need to perform repairs on the engine or the pollution control systems when these are needed. If these repairs are not performed in a timely manner, the OBM system will be able to ultimately prevent engine restart, akin to the existing low-reagent driver warning system in some compression ignition vehicles. The second purpose of OBM is to monitor the compliance of vehicle types with the emission limits.

Human Chest Impact Protection Criteria

Serious injuries are caused to the chest and thoracic organs both in front and side automobile collisions, and statistical surveys indicate that overall chest injuries are the third most frequent after head and the lower limbs. For safer design of restraint systems and vehicle interiors experimental data has to be obtained to establish chest injury criteria. Unembalmed human cadavers were used to conduct nine frontal and fourteen lateral impacts including four with a simulated arm rest. All impacts used a six inch (15.2 cm) diameter impactor with impact velocities ranging from 12 mph (19.3 kph) to 20 mph (32.2 kph). Chest impacts were also conducted on rhesus monkeys and baboons to establish primate-human injury scaling criteria. Four human volunteers were used to obtain static load deflection curves in the lateral and frontal directions. The results of the above experiments and those conducted by other investigators are presented and analyzed.

Designing trucks for good ride characteristics is a challenge to the engineer, given the many design constraints imposed by requirements for transport productivity and efficiency. The objective of this lecture is to explain why trucks ride as they do, and the basic mechanisms involved. The response of primary interest is the vibration to which the driver is exposed in the cab. Whole-body vibration tolerance curves give an indication of how those vibrations are perceived at the seat; however, ride studies have shown that visual and hand/foot vibrations are also important to the perception of ride in trucks. The ride environment of the truck driver is the product of the applied excitation and the response properties of the truck. The major excitation sources are road roughness, the rotating tire/wheel assemblies, the driveline, and the engine.

Standardized Differential Inductive Positioning System for Wireless Charging of Electric Vehicles

To shape future mobility MAHLE has committed itself to foster wireless charging for electrical vehicles. The standardized wireless power transfer of 11 kW at a voltage level of 800 V significantly improves the end user experience for charging an electric vehicle without the need to handle a connector and cable anymore. Combined with automated parking and autonomous driving systems, the challenge to charge fleets without user interaction is solved. Wireless charging is based on inductive power transfer. In the ground assembly’s (GA) power transfer coil, a magnetic field is generated which induces a voltage in the vehicle assembly (VA) power transfer coil. To transfer the power from grid to battery with a high efficiency up to 92% the power transfer coils are compensated with resonant circuits. In this paper the Differential-Inductive-Positioning-System (DIPS) to align a vehicle on the GA for parking will be presented.

The Effects of Axial Preload and Dorsiflexion on the Tolerance of the Ankle/Subtalar Joint to Dynamic Inversion and Eversion

Forced inversion or eversion of the foot is considered a common mechanism of ankle injury in vehicle crashes. The objective of this study was to model empirically the injury tolerance of the human ankle/subtalar joint to dynamic inversion and eversion under three different loading conditions: neutral flexion with no axial preload, neutral flexion with 2 kN axial preload, and 30° of dorsiflexion with 2 kN axial preload. 44 tests were conducted on cadaveric lower limbs, with injury occurring in 30 specimens. Common injuries included malleolar fractures, osteochondral fractures of the talus, fractures of the lateral process of the talus, and collateral ligament tears, depending on the loading configuration. The time of injury was determined either by the peak ankle moment or by a sudden drop in ankle moment that was accompanied by a burst of acoustic emission. Characteristic moment-angle curves to injury were generated for each loading configuration.

CAE Method for Evaluating Mechanical Performance of Battery Packs under Mechanical Shock Testing

Mechanical shock tests for lithium metal and lithium-ion batteries often require that each cell or battery pack be subjected to multiple shocks in the positive and negative directions, of three mutually perpendicular orientations. This paper focuses on the no-disassembly requirement of those testing conditions and on the CAE methodology specifically developed to perform this assessment. Ford Motor Company developed a CAE analysis method to simulate this type of test and assess the possibility of cell dislodging. This CAE method helps identify and diagnose potential failure modes, thus guiding the Design Team in developing a strategy to meet the required performance under shock test loads. The final CAE-driven design focuses on the structural requirement and optimization, and leads to cost savings without compromising cell or pack mechanical performance.

Mechanical drawing plays an important role in managing, designing and implementing engineering projects, especially in the field of the automotive industry. The need for accuracy in element design and manufacturing is greater now than ever before in engineering industries. In order to increase accuracy, the part design and function must be clearly communicated between the design engineer and the manufacturing technicians, especially in automotive industry and feeder industries projects. Geometric Dimensions and Tolerances (GD&T) system of elements determines the quality, importance and price of the designed product. The standard used in the United States to define GD&T methodology is ASME Y14.5-2009 while the standard used in Europe is ISO 1101-2017. This article discussed the importance of using GD&T system including the types of geometrical features, limitations and accuracy, datum references frame and feature control frame to handle these symbols seamlessly.

Stochastic Preignition (SPI) is an abnormal combustion phenomenon for internal combustion engines (ICE), which has been a significant impact to automotive companies developing high efficiency, turbocharged, direct fuel injection, spark ignited engines. It is becoming clearer what fuel properties are related to the cause of SPI, whether directly with fuel preparation in the cylinder, or mechanisms related to the deposit build-up which contributes to initial and follow-on SPI events. The purpose of this paper is to provide a summary of global market gasoline fuel properties with special attention given to properties and specific compounds from the fuel and fuel additives that can contribute to SPI and the deposit build-up in engines. Based on a review of the global fuel quality, it appears that the fuel quality has not caught up to meet the technology requirements for fuel economy from modern technology engines.

About 200,000 miles (~8 times around the earth) comprise the National Highway System, which carries most of the highway freight and traffic in the U.S. The core of the nation’s highway system is the 48,254 miles of Interstate Highways, which comprise just over 1 percent of highway mileage but carry over 25% of all highway traffic. Americans traveled a total of 5.3 trillion miles by all transportation modes in 2016, an average of 16,400 miles per person. About 80 percent was by automobile, truck, or motorcycle. Due to a high contribution to mobility and energy consumption, freeways and highway have been attracting researchers to move more vehicles faster and in energy-efficient manner. The research interest in motorways and highways has been driven by their significant impact on transportation efficiency and energy consumption, as they facilitate the movement of vehicles at higher speeds while optimizing energy usage.

The paramount importance of titanium alloy in implant materials stems from its exceptional qualities, yet the optimization of bone integration and mitigation of wear and corrosion necessitate advanced technologies. Consequently, there has been a surge in research efforts focusing on surface modification of biomaterials to meet these challenges. This project is dedicated to enhancing the surface of titanium alloys by employing shot peening and powder coatings of titanium oxide and zinc oxide. Comparative analyses were meticulously conducted on the mechanical and wear properties of both treated and untreated specimens, ensuring uniformity in pressure, distance, and time parameters across all experiments. The outcomes underscore the efficacy of both methods in modifying the surface of the titanium alloy, leading to substantial alterations in surface properties.

Ducted Fuel Injection: Confirmed Re-entrainment Hypothesis

Testing of ducted fuel injection (DFI) in a single-cylinder engine with production-like hardware previously showed that adding a duct structure increased soot emissions at the full load, rated speed operating point [1]. The authors hypothesized that the DFI flame, which travels faster than a conventional diesel combustion (CDC) flame, and has a shorter distance to travel, was being re-entrained into the on-going fuel injection around the lift-off length (LOL), thus reducing air entrainment into the on-going injection. The engine operating condition and the engine combustion chamber geometry were duplicated in a constant pressure vessel. The experimental setup used a 3D piston section combined with a glass fire deck allowing for a comparison between a CDC flame and a DFI flame via high-speed imaging. CH* imaging of the 3D piston profile view clearly confirmed the re-entrainment hypothesis presented in the previous engine work.

Damping Force Optimal Control Strategy for Semi-Active Suspension System

Semi-active suspension system (SASS) could enhance the ride comfort of the vehicle across different operating conditions through adjusting damping characteristics. However, current SASS are often calibrated based on engineering experience when selecting parameters for its controller, which complicates the achievement of optimal performance and leads to a decline in ride comfort for the vehicle being controlled. Linear quadratic constrained optimal control is a crucial tool for enhancing the performance of semi-active suspensions. It considers various performance objectives, such as ride comfort, handling stability, and driving safety. This study presents a control strategy for determining optimal damping force in SASS to enhance driving comfort. First, we analyze the working principle of the SASS and construct a seven-degree-of-freedom model.

The paper deals with the virtual and experimental analysis of two commercial Mechanical Brake Assist systems. They are described in detail, then modeled and experimentally evaluated through a Hardware-In-the-Loop test bench and road tests. Three different kinds of drivers are compared, from the point of view of the performance increase promised by Brake Assist during an emergency brake maneuver. The three driver types are based on the measurement of the behavior of real drivers, as it is presented in specific research activities in literature.

A Study on the Effect of Brake Assist Systems (BAS)

BAS assists driver's by automatically increasing their braking power during an emergency brake event when the driver is unable to apply a sufficient brake force.. There are two performance requirements that BAS must fulfill in order to be employed effectively. One is the ability to activate when the driver suddenly applies brakes in an emergency while the other is the ability to provide additional assistance. Further study of BAS activation timing and degree of assistance in relation to driver acceptance is needed. The driver's acceptance of BAS refers to the BAS activation only during an emergency. A study was conducted to clarify drivers' emergency braking characteristics and measure the frequency of BAS activation during normal braking. One aim of the study was to verify driver characteristics during emergency braking on a test course.

Modeling Drivers' Behavior During Panic Braking for Brake Assist Application, Using Neural Networks and Logistic Regression and a Comparison

Researchers have shown that unskilled drivers fail to apply sufficient force on brake pedal in emergency. To solve this problem, Brake Assist System (BAS) is used to enhance the vacuum brake booster performance and results decrease in stopping distance. A major problem in BAS is to determine if a panic braking has been occurred or not. In this study, a model of drivers' behavior during a severe braking is created using both neural networks and logistic regression methods to determine the BAS threshold activation. Samples of brake pedal speed, Brake pedal displacement, and vehicle acceleration measured from panic and normal situations, will be fed for training neural networks and acquiring logistic regression equation. From both methods, the probability of a panic and normal situation will be determined.

A Novel Kalman Filter Based Road Grade Estimation Method

This paper presents a novel Kalman filter based road grade estimation method using measurements from an accelerometer, a gyroscope and a velocity sensor. The accelerometer measures the longitudinal proper acceleration of the vehicle, and the accelerometer measurement is almost drift free but it is heavily corrupted by the accelerometer noise. The gyroscope measures the pitch rate of the vehicle, and the gyroscope measurement is quite clean but it is substantially disturbed by the gyroscope bias. The velocity sensor measures the longitudinal velocity of the vehicle, and the velocity sensor measurement is also considerably corrupted by the measurement noise. The developed Kalman filter based estimation method uses the models of the sensors and their outputs, and fuses the sensor measurements to optimally estimate the road grade. The simulation results show that the developed method is very effective in producing an accurate road grade estimate.

Development of the Brake Assist System

We investigated and analyzed the average vehicle-driver's braking behavior in panic situations by conducting vehicle tests that duplicated real world conditions that would require emergency braking performance. From our investigation, we have noticed that when panic braking is recognized, supplying additional braking power is effective for active safety. The Brake Assist System, which supplies full constant braking force when panic braking is recognized, is effective for drivers who cannot apply enough braking effort. However, in some case, such a system makes more experienced drivers uncomfortable because the deceleration caused by this full constant braking force might be different from their intentions. Considering these issues, we have developed the Brake Assist System that increases its controllability while reducing its discomfort. The TOYOTA RAUM has been available with the Brake Assist System since May 1997.
